Hala Elkoussy’s East of Noon is a mesmerizing cinematic experience that blends surreal fantasy with stark realism. The film, which is competing in the International Competition category at the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), has been garnering international acclaim for its unique visual style and thought-provoking narrative.

Director Hala Elkoussy, in an exclusive interview, shared her insights into the challenges and rewards of creating such a visually striking and conceptually ambitious film. One of the biggest hurdles was the logistical challenge of shooting on film stock in a country where film labs have been defunct for over a decade. Elkoussy’s determination to capture the film’s desired aesthetic led her to overcome this obstacle and revive the lost art of celluloid filmmaking.

The film’s rich visual language is heavily influenced by Egyptian folklore. Elkoussy’s approach to folklore is not merely a nostalgic retelling, but a contemporary reinterpretation that challenges traditional narratives and explores the complexities of identity and cultural heritage. By blending the familiar with the fantastical, the director creates a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating cinematic experience.

Elkoussy’s unique approach to filmmaking is evident in her diverse body of work, which ranges from intimate dramas like Cactus Flower to surreal fantasies like East of Noon. She believes that the story dictates the form, and the director’s role is to find the most suitable visual language to convey the narrative.

It is an immense pleasure to show in India, a country that means so much to me, a sister rich culture, that does not cease to inspire me. I am honored and pleased at the same time,” expressed Elkoussy.
