The Indian National Congress Party's decision to suspend Rahul Mamkootathil for his alleged licentious behavior towards women is not only fair but necessary, said George Abraham, Vice-Chair of the Indian Overseas Congress, USA. Political leaders owe their constituents a higher standard of ethics and morality than what has too often been tolerated, and the Congress Party has sent the right message: misconduct will not be ignored.
The AICC High Command knew that this decision would cost the party a promising youth leader with a considerable following. Yet authentic leadership is measured not by protecting one's own but by upholding values even when it is painful. In this case, the Congress has shown itself willing to confront issues directly, a stark contrast to the cynical practices of the CPM and BJP, who have often shielded their own for the sake of expediency. By doing so, the party has safeguarded both its credibility and its moral standing before the public, instilling confidence in its leadership.
This scandal surfaced just as Rahul was preparing to travel to the United States. While American jurisprudence insists on the principle of innocence until proven guilty, the outcry surrounding these allegations was already too loud to ignore, and his visit had to be cancelled. That raises a serious question: how can he effectively serve his constituents while such grave charges continue to cast a shadow over his leadership?
Equally troubling are the cyberattacks launched by Rahul's allies against Mr. V.D. Satheesan, who courageously took a stand for principle. Such attacks are not only counterproductive but deeply corrosive to the values Congress has always claimed to uphold. Instead of rallying behind wrongdoing, the party must rally behind high standards of personal conduct. Encouragingly, the women's leadership of the KPCC has stood firmly with the High Command's decision, demonstrating the party's commitment to supporting women in politics. Their stance is a reminder that failure to act decisively against such alleged behavior will only silence and discourage women who aspire to active roles in political life.
The Congress now has an opportunity and an obligation to turn this crisis into a moment of renewal. By demonstrating that it will not compromise on standards of ethics and morality, the party can restore unity, build harmony across its ranks, and enter the upcoming Municipal, Panchayat, and Vidhan Sabha elections with renewed credibility and strength.
