There was a time when rest actually felt like rest. You could sit for a while, do nothing, and it didn’t feel strange. But somewhere along the way, that changed. Now, the moment things get quiet, we reach for our phones. We scroll through whatever is there, just to fill the space. It feels like we’re taking a break, but most of the time, it doesn’t really feel like peace.
It happens without thinking. A few minutes turn into much longer, and before you realize it, that quiet moment is gone. We move from one thing to another, not really stopping anywhere. It keeps the mind busy, but not settled. In fact, sometimes it leaves us feeling more tired than before. What we call rest has slowly turned into something else, and we don’t always notice it.
Maybe the issue isn’t just the scrolling, but what we’ve replaced. We’re not used to silence anymore. Sitting still feels uncomfortable. It’s easier to keep our minds occupied than to sit with our thoughts. But those quiet moments we avoid are often where things start to make sense. As the Bible says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” It’s simple, but honestly, not easy to live out in a world that never really slows down.
Real rest probably isn’t found in distraction. It’s in stepping away, even for a little while, from all the noise. It’s in letting your mind slow down and not rushing to fill every second. Maybe the kind of rest we’re looking for isn’t something new, but something we’ve slowly moved away from. And maybe it begins the moment we finally allow ourselves to pause.
