ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ പാഷന്‍ അയാളുടെ സര്‍ഗാത്മകതയെ ഉയര്‍ത്തുകയും ചുറ്റുപാടുമുള്ള ഇടപെടലിനെ  പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയും പ്രതിസന്ധികളെ  നേരിട്ട് വിജയം വരിക്കുവാന്‍ പ്രാപ്തമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍  നമുക്ക് പറയാം - "Passion Drives Powerful Outcomes!' എന്ന്. അങ്ങനെ ശക്തമായ തന്‍റെ പാഷന്‍ കൊണ്ട് പടുത്തുയര്‍ത്തിയ ഒരു വലിയ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലേക്ക് നമ്മെ സാദരം ക്ഷണിക്കുകയാണ് ഡോ മാണി സ്കറിയ.

പുതിയ തുടക്കങ്ങള്‍ക്കും പിന്നീടുള്ള വിജയസഫലതകള്‍ക്കും വഴിതെളിക്കുന്ന അത്തരം ഒരു പാഷനെ പറ്റിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ സിട്രസ് യാത്ര പറഞ്ഞുതരുന്നത്. പാഷനെ നേരമ്പോക്കായി കണക്കാക്കുന്ന ഒട്ടനേകം പേരോട് ആ പാഷനെ കേവലം എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാതെ പവര്‍ഫുള്‍ എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം തെളിയിച്ചു കൊടുത്തതിന് ഒരു ഉദാഹരണമാണ് ടെക്സസ് സിട്രസ് ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രിയുടെ ഇന്നത്തെ പരിണാമം. (The term citrus includes different varieties such as lime, lemon, orange, mandarin, grapefruit, etc. )
Seven years ago, a video segment on Mani Skaria and US Citrus company aired on Asia Net America Ee Azhcha by Krishna Kishore and Shijo Poulose, 2017. It began with,(ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള മലയാളികളുടെ അഭിമാനമായി ഡോ. മാണി സ്കറിയ) But in the recent four years, Dr. Skaria's citrus orchards and nurseries were impacted by two natural disasters: a 2020 hurricane and a 2021 Texas freeze, both causing millions of dollars in damage. Today, Dr. Skaria reflected, saying, "do not measure me by my successes, but by how many times I have stumbled and risen again with resilience. It is in those moments of adversity that my true character is revealed, and in those moments, I shine the brightest through the Grace of God and people support."

സിട്രസ് യാത്രയെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോള്‍ അതില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ എക്കാലത്തെയും  സംഭാവന തന്നെയാണ്  (Texas citrus industry)  ടെക്സസ് സിട്രസ് ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രിയുടെ ഈ പരിണാമം. സിട്രസ് വ്യവസായത്തിലേക്കുള്ള മാണി സ്കറിയയുടെ കാല്‍വെയ്പ്പ് അദ്ദേഹം ആലോചിച്ചുറപ്പിച്ച ഒന്നല്ല. ചില വ്യക്തികളെ ചില കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി നിയോഗിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ. 1952-ല്‍ കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ അമയന്നൂരില്‍ ജനിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പഠനത്തോട് വലിയ താത്പര്യമായിരുന്നു. മകന്‍ പഠിച്ചു മിടുക്കനാവുന്നതില്‍ മാതാപിതാക്കളും തല്പരരായതോടെ ഉയരങ്ങള്‍ എത്തിപ്പിടിക്കാന്‍ മാണി സ്കറിയയ്ക്ക് ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകള്‍ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.
ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങള്‍ മുന്‍പില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ദൗത്യം, വിധി എന്നിവ മാണി സ്കറിയയെ എന്നാല്‍ മറ്റൊരിടത്താണ് എത്തിച്ചത്.  ജോര്‍ദാനിലെ ഒരു അപ്രതീക്ഷിത അദ്ധ്യാപക ജോലിയാണ്. ഈ ജോലി തന്നെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പിന്നീട് ടെക്സസിലെ സിട്രസ് വ്യവസായ വിപ്ലവത്തിന്‍റെ നായകനാക്കി മാറ്റിയതും. വിധി പലപ്പോഴും നമ്മളെ നമ്മള്‍ വിചാരിച്ച രീതിയിലേക്ക് നടത്തും അതുമല്ലെങ്കില്‍, കാലമാവശ്യപ്പെടുന്ന ദൗത്യത്തിന് പിറകിലേക്ക് നമ്മെ നയിക്കും. ഇതുതന്നെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ  ജീവിതത്തിലും സംഭവിച്ചത്. പിന്നീട് 1979ല്‍ യു.എസിലെ പര്‍ഡ്യു യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയില്‍  (Washington State University)നിന്നും(USAID Mission) പ്ലാന്‍റ് പത്തോളജിയില്‍ പി. എച്ച്. ഡി ചെയ്യാന്‍ അവസരം ലഭിച്ചു.  അങ്ങനെ 1988ല്‍ Texas A&M University - Kingsville Citrus Center) ടെക്സസ്  A&M യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കിങ്സ്വില്ലേ സിട്രസ് സെന്‍ററില്‍ അസിസ്റ്റന്‍റ് പ്രൊഫസറായി അദ്ദേഹം നിയമിതനായി.  കൂടാതെ 1984-88 കാലയളവില്‍  (Washington State University)  വാഷിംഗ്ടണ്‍ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയുടെ (USAID Mission) യു. എസ്. എയ്ഡ് മിഷന്‍ കോണ്‍ട്രാക്ട് ചെയ്ത  Jordan Valley Agricultural Services project  ജോര്‍ദാന്‍ വാലി അഗ്രികള്‍ച്ചര്‍ സര്‍വീസ് പ്രോജക്ടിന്‍റെ ഭാഗമായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുവാനും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കഴിഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ സിട്രസ് ഫ്രൂട്സ്  നേരിടുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചും പരിഹാരമാര്‍ഗങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചും ഗഹനമായ അറിവുകള്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു. ടെക്സസ് A&M സിട്രസ് സെന്‍ററില്‍ എത്തിയപ്പോഴാണ്  ടെക്സസ് സിട്രസ് നഴ്സറി ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രി നേരിടുന്ന വെല്ലുവിളികളെ കുറിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അറിയാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞത്. ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള മറ്റ് മുന്‍നിര സിട്രസ് പ്രദേശങ്ങളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് ഗുണനിലവാര നിയന്ത്രണത്തില്‍ കാര്യമായ വിടവ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയതായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍പ്പെട്ടു. ടെക്സസ് സിട്രസ് നഴ്സറിയുടെ നിലവാരം ഉയര്‍ത്തുവാനുള്ള നിശ്ചയദാര്‍ഢ്യത്തോടെ അദ്ദേഹം പല പദ്ധതികളും ആരംഭിച്ചു. തുടക്കത്തില്‍ ചെറുത്തുനില്‍പ്പും അവഗണനയും നേരിട്ടുവെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ  അചഞ്ചലമായ പ്രതിബദ്ധത ഒടുവില്‍ നഴ്സറി ഉടമകളെ തന്‍റെ സംരംഭത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രാധാന്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തി. നൂതനമായ വിള ഉല്‍പ്പാദനത്തിലൂടെയും സംരക്ഷണത്തിലൂടെയും സിട്രസ് വ്യവസായത്തിലെ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നല്‍കി.
ടെക്സസിന്‍റെ ചരിത്രത്തില്‍ ആദ്യമായി ക്ലീന്‍ സിട്രസ് പ്രോഗ്രാം സ്ഥാപിച്ചത് അദ്ദേഹമാണ് . അതായത് വിദേശരാജ്യത്ത് ഒരു ഇന്ത്യക്കാരന്‍ മലയാളിയുടെ കയ്യൊപ്പ് ചാര്‍ത്തുന്നു.

Scientific Discoveries. 
2010- Sweet Orange Scab (SOS) disease for the first time in the USA. This disease is one of the five quarantine citrus diseases in the USA as per USDA.  In year 2000, Dr. Skaria's initiatives lead to the discovery of a destructive pest for the first time in Texas, called Diaprepes root weevil. The economic impact of this pest was calculated at $15 billion by the Texas Department of Agriculture. 
 ലോകചരിത്രത്തില്‍ ആദ്യമായി സിട്രസ് പ്രൊഡക്ഷന്‍ എക്കണോമിക്സില്‍ മാതൃകാപരമായ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ടുവന്നതാണ് സിട്രസ് യാത്രയിലെ ഡോ മാണി സ്കറിയയുടെ മൂന്നാമത്തെ സംഭാവനയായി പറയാനുള്ളത്. സിട്രസ് വ്യവസായത്തില്‍ മൈക്രോ ബഡിങ് എന്ന ആശയം പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയതും അതിന്‍റെ നവീകരണം പിന്നീട് വ്യവസായത്തെ ആഴത്തില്‍ സ്വാധീനിച്ചതും  അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ  വിജയ വഴികള്‍ക്ക്  സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിച്ചു. തുടക്കത്തില്‍ അവിശ്വസനീയം എന്ന് കരുതി സംശയാസ്പദമായ  സാഹചര്യങ്ങളെ നേരിട്ട് സിട്രസ് ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രി  ഈ ആശയത്തെ വീണ്ടും   ഇരുകൈയും നീട്ടി സ്വീകരിച്ചു.

Micro-Budded, High-Density Planting (MBHD). This is a new concept that Dr. Skaria introduced to the citrus world. Planting very small trees (3 to 4 months old) compared to 24-month-old nursery plants and 690 to 880 trees per acre instead of the traditional 125 trees per acre. Citrus growers in Texas were OK to accept the bold idea and its potential. However, no one was willing to be the first to step up and take the plunge into a new way of planting.
An Iconic Picture. The picture above symbolizes the new citrus production method for quicker and higher profitability, introduced by Dr. Mani Skaria. Traditionally, planting a citrus orchard requires a two-year wait to get trees ready in the nursery. A nursery tree would need a minimum of six months to get established in the ground, and it takes a minimum of four years for commercial fruit harvest. A grapefruit orchard will take 8 years to reach a maximum production of 25 tons of fruit/acre. It takes a minimum of 12 years to recoup all investment; the trees will produce fruit for many years. 

The Difference. The iconic picture in the top represents a world record in fruit production achieved two years ahead of industry standards, all thanks to micro-budding for faster fruit production. By the fourth year, fruit production per acre has increased, record-breaking yields in less than half the conventional time. Skaria planted the first two rows of trees in the fall of 2010. In 2013, from each tree sold 80lbs. There were 565 trees per acre, making it a world record production of 22 tons per acre in the third year. Payback of expenses is by year seven. Compare this with 25-ton production in year eight. 
Advisory Positions. Dr. Skaria has held leadership roles in various regional, national, and international scientific societies. He has served as an advisor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Citrus Center. Additionally, he has provided advisory guidance to the Texas Department of Agriculture under multiple commissioners and the Texas Department of Health on improving school air quality. Furthermore, in the citrus industry, Dr. Skaria has served as a citrus advisor to the Secretary of Agriculture under both the Trump and Biden administrations. 

സൗത്ത് ടെക്സസിലേക്ക് മാറിയപ്പോള്‍ ഡോ. മാണി സ്കറിയക്ക് ഗുരുതരമായ അലര്‍ജി ആസ്മ പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍ നേരിടേണ്ടതായി വന്നിരുന്നു. തുടക്കത്തില്‍ കീടനാശിനി സംവേദന ക്ഷമതയായി തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് താമസത്തിലും  ജീവിത രീതിയിലും വരുത്തിയ മാറ്റം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ അസുഖത്തിനെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കി. അങ്ങനെയാണ് വീട്ടിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന  അലര്‍ജികളെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കുവാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് താല്പര്യം തോന്നുന്നത്.  ഇത് ഹാര്‍വാര്‍ഡ് സ്കൂള്‍ ഓഫ് പബ്ലിക് ഹെല്‍ത്തില്‍ പ്രത്യേക പരിശീലനത്തിന് ചേര്‍ന്നു. 
ഈ മേഖലയോട് അഭിനിവേശമുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രാരംഭ പഠനങ്ങള്‍ മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ ആരോഗ്യത്തിലും ഹോം ഡയഗ്നോസ്റ്റിക്സിലും ശ്രദ്ധ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു ഫാമിലി കണ്‍സള്‍ട്ടിംഗ് ബിസിനസ് ആയി പരിണമിച്ചു.

ഡോ. മാണി സ്കറിയയുടെ ഈ വിജയഗാഥയില്‍ ഡോ. ജോണ്‍ ഫ്യൂസിക്ക് എന്ന കാര്‍ഷിക ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്‍ നിര്‍ണായക പങ്കുവഹിച്ചു. സിട്രസ് ഉല്‍പാദനത്തിലും നവീകരണത്തിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രേരണയായി ഫ്യൂസിക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. യു,. എസ്. സിട്രസ് ആസ്ഥാനത്തുള്ള ഫ്യൂസിക്ക് ലെയിന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തോടുള്ള നന്ദിയുടെ പ്രതീകമായി സ്ഥാപിച്ചതാണ്. ഡോ.മാണി സ്‌കറിയയുടെ അമ്മ സാറ, ഏതു പ്രതിസന്ധികളെയും നേരിടാന്‍ ധൈര്യമുള്ള ഒരു മനസ്സിനെ വളര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ എക്കാലവും പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ച ഒരു വ്യക്തിത്വം കൂടിയാണെന്ന് പറയുമ്പോള്‍ പ്രകൃതി അമ്മ സങ്കല്പം കൂടുതല്‍ ദൃഢമാകുന്നു. 
തന്‍റെ കണ്ടെത്തലുകള്‍ പുതിയ തലമുറയിലേക്ക് പകര്‍ന്നുകൊടുക്കാന്‍ ആര്‍ജവം കാണിച്ചതിനാല്‍ 2010-ല്‍, ടെക്സസ് എ ആന്‍ഡ് എം യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി - കിംഗ്സ്വില്ലെയില്‍ നിന്ന് മികച്ച സീനിയര്‍ ഫാക്കല്‍റ്റി ടീച്ചിംഗ് അവാര്‍ഡ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു. 2016-ല്‍, റിയോ ഗ്രാന്‍ഡെ വാലി ഹോര്‍ട്ടികള്‍ച്ചറല്‍ സൊസൈറ്റി കാര്‍ഷിക മേഖലയിലെ മികച്ച ഹോര്‍ട്ടികള്‍ച്ചറല്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ആര്‍തര്‍ ടി.പോട്ട്സ് അവാര്‍ഡ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് നല്‍കി. 2018-ല്‍, സൗത്ത് ടെക്സാസ് ബെറ്റര്‍ ബിസിനസ് ബ്യൂറോ മേരി ജി. മോഡ് എത്തിക്സ് അവാര്‍ഡ് (ബിസിനസ്സ് ചെയ്യുന്നതിനുള്ള ധാര്‍മ്മികവശം പരമാവധി നിറവേറ്റിയതിനും കോര്‍പ്പറേറ്റ് സോഷ്യല്‍ റെസ്പോണ്‍സിബിലിറ്റി, ഹ്യൂമന്‍ റിസോഴ്സ് ഡെവലപ്മെന്‍റ് എന്നിവയുടെ തത്വങ്ങള്‍ കൃത്യമായി പരിശീലിച്ചതിനും) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു. ടെക്സസ് ഡിപ്പാര്‍ട്ട്മെന്‍റ് ഓഫ് അഗ്രികള്‍ച്ചറിനു കീഴിലും ട്രംപിന്‍റെയും ബൈഡന്‍റെയും ഭരണകൂടങ്ങള്‍ക്കു  കീഴിലും  അഗ്രികള്‍ച്ചര്‍ സെക്രട്ടറിയുടെ ഉപദേശക സ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ അദ്ദേഹം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 

A paradigm shift I introduced results from collaborative effort initiated by my idea or innovation. It was challenged, tested, retested, and refined by numerous individuals and institutions. Even those growers and colleagues who initially rejected my ideas significantly impacted my success. My dedicated staff, who manufacture plants, and the team that carefully packs fruit grown under strin-
gent quality control and organic principles all contributed to my journey. When faced with rejection, I took those figurative stones and used them to build a strong foundation.If you are passionate about an idea and can establish a proof of concept, then you have the groundwork to build a thriving business — immensely rewarding.
