Tampa(Florida):Mathew Achan, a member of the Kurishummuttil family who had come to Kallissery from Kaduthuruthy, came to Tampa, USA in 1991. In the same year, he organized the Knanaya Jacobite group. Arch Bishop Mar Clemes appointed him as the vicar of St. Mary’s Knanaya Jacobite church in Tampa. While serving as the vicar without any remuneration, he suffered a stroke and was bedridden for a long time. In high school, he acted in several plays with film star M.G. Soman. After completing high school, he joined the Christian College in Madras and continued his studies. At the age of twenty-one, he started his ministry in Himachal Pradesh as a missionary. While he was a deacon he married the daughter of Abraham Thomas of Alummoottil. He completed his religious studies from Dayarai and Mar Aprem Seminary in Manjanikkara. As a priest, he first took charge as the vicar of Veliyanad Knanaya St. Stephen Church. Before coming to the USA, he was the secretary of Knanaya Suvishesh Samajam and actively worked in the Kerala anti-alcohol movement under the leadership of the ecumenical movement. He was very proud to be a Knanaya priest. Thus, Fr. Mathews who had been in the service of the church and community for a long time, was recalled on April 29. He was the first Malayalee priest who died in Tampa. ആദരാഞ്ജലികൾ!!My condolences to the family.
He is survived by his loving wife Sosamma Mathews and Children---Salmon and Rehi Mathew, Tom and Pinky Mathew,T.K.Mathew and Swaroop Mathew,Jacob and Tintu Mathew and grandkids.
